Annabelle is a 2014 American supernatural horror film directed by John R. Leonetti, a spin-off from The Conjuring exploring the origin of the possessed Annabelle doll. Set in the late 1960s, the film follows married couple John and Mia Form, played by Ward Horton and Annabelle Wallis, whose vintage porcelain doll becomes a conduit for demonic activity after a violent home invasion by cult members during which the dying cultist's blood drips onto the doll.
The escalating supernatural phenomena β moving objects, spectral figures, and the doll appearing in impossible locations β threaten Mia and her newborn baby. While the film received mixed reviews compared to its parent franchise, the Annabelle doll's creepy design and the 1960s setting created an effective atmosphere. Annabelle earned $257 million worldwide on a $6.5 million budget, an extraordinary return that confirmed the commercial viability of the Conjuring Universe's spin-off strategy.
