Annabelle: Creation is a 2017 American supernatural horror film directed by David F. Sandberg, a prequel exploring the origin of the possessed Annabelle doll from the Conjuring Universe. Set in 1955, the film follows a group of orphaned girls who are taken in by a former dollmaker and his wife, who have become reclusive following the tragic death of their daughter Annabelle twelve years earlier.
When one of the girls discovers a locked room containing the dollmaker's most disturbing creation, she unknowingly releases a demonic entity that had been contained within. David F. Sandberg, who came to Hollywood through his acclaimed short films Lights Out and its feature adaptation, demonstrated exceptional command of horror filmmaking craft โ the farmhouse setting was milked for every shadow, creak, and blind corner.
The film was a significant improvement over the critically maligned first Annabelle and earned $306 million worldwide on a $15 million budget, one of the best returns in the Conjuring Universe.
