Apocalypto is a 2006 American epic historical adventure directed by Mel Gibson. Set in Mesoamerica during the terminal decline of the Maya civilization, the film follows Jaguar Paw, played by Rudy Youngblood, a young hunter from a peaceful forest village who is captured by a raiding party from a nearby Maya city-state and marched to the capital for sacrifice. After narrowly escaping death atop a pyramid temple, Jaguar Paw must race through the jungle to return to his pregnant wife and young son, whom he hid in a deep pit before his capture, with pursuing warriors close behind.
Mel Gibson directed Apocalypto entirely in the Yucatec Maya language with an indigenous cast, an audacious creative choice for a major studio release that gave the film an authenticity and immediacy unique in historical cinema. The physical endurance demanded of the cast โ running, fighting, and performing elaborate stunts in real jungle environments โ was extraordinary. The depiction of Maya civilization was visually stunning, from the vast limestone cities to the elaborate costumes and body paint, though historians debated the film's conflation of different Maya historical periods.
Apocalypto earned $120 million worldwide on a $40 million budget.
