Bad Boys II (2003)
- Eagle-eyed viewers have noticed a hidden easter egg referencing Michael Bay's previous film in the background of the opening scene.
- Before Martin Lawrence was cast, several major A-list stars turned down the lead role because they felt the script was too risky.
- Many of the practical effects used in the climax were achieved without any CGI.
Bad Boys II is a 2003 American action comedy directed by Michael Bay, the sequel to the 1995 original. Will Smith and Martin Lawrence return as Miami detectives Mike Lowrey and Marcus Burnett, who investigate a flow of ecstasy being smuggled from Cuba into Miami by the flamboyant drug lord Hector Juan Carlos "Johnny" Tapia, played by Jordi Molla. When the investigation puts Marcus's sister Syd, played by Gabrielle Union, in danger — complicated by the fact that she and Mike are secretly dating — the detectives must infiltrate Tapia's operation in a mission that culminates in an unauthorized invasion of Cuba.
Michael Bay pushed his maximalist style to its most extreme with Bad Boys II, delivering a 147-minute barrage of explosions, car chases through shantytowns (destroying everything in their path), a corpse-dumping freeway chase, and a climactic assault on a Cuban mansion. The film earned $273 million worldwide on a $130 million budget.
