Casper is a 1995 American fantasy comedy directed by Brad Silberstein, based on the Harvey Comics character. Christina Ricci stars as Kat Harvey, a teenager whose ghost therapist father Dr. James Harvey, played by Bill Pullman, is hired by the greedy heiress Carrigan Crittenden, played by Cathy Moriarty, to rid the haunted Whipstaff Manor of its resident ghosts so she can search for a hidden treasure.
The ghosts โ the friendly, lonely Casper and his three mischievous, antagonistic uncles Stretch, Stinkie, and Fatso โ are fully CGI characters, and Casper was the first film to feature a CGI character in a leading role. Casper's backstory, revealing he was a boy who died of pneumonia and has been waiting alone in the mansion for a friend, provided the film's emotional center. The visual effects, revolutionary for 1995, created transparent, glowing characters that interacted convincingly with live-action environments.
Casper earned $287 million worldwide on a $55 million budget.
