Crazy, Stupid, Love. is a 2011 American romantic comedy-drama directed by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa. Steve Carell stars as Cal Weaver, a middle-aged man whose comfortable suburban existence is shattered when his wife Emily, played by Julianne Moore, asks for a divorce. While wallowing at a bar, Cal is taken under the wing of Jacob Palmer, played by Ryan Gosling, a confident, impeccably dressed ladies' man who undertakes a makeover of Cal's wardrobe, attitude, and dating life.
The film weaves together multiple romantic storylines โ Cal and Emily's separation, Jacob's unexpected genuine connection with Hannah played by Emma Stone, Cal's 13-year-old son's crush on his babysitter, and the babysitter's crush on Cal โ that collide in a climactic backyard scene of cascading revelations. Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone's chemistry was so palpable that it led directly to their casting together in La La Land. Steve Carell demonstrated his dramatic range alongside his comedic gifts, making Cal's heartbreak and transformation feel authentic.
The film's twist, connecting the seemingly separate storylines in an unexpected way, provided one of the most satisfying and hilarious reveals in modern romantic comedy. Crazy, Stupid, Love. earned $142 million worldwide on a $50 million budget.
