Cruella is a 2021 American crime comedy film directed by Craig Gillespie, an origin story for Cruella de Vil, the iconic villain of Disney's One Hundred and One Dalmatians. Emma Stone stars as Estella, a clever, fashion-obsessed orphan in 1970s London who discovers that the Baroness von Hellman, a legendary fashion designer played by Emma Thompson, is connected to her mother's death. Channeling her grief and rage into a punk-inspired alter ego named Cruella, Estella wages an escalating war of fashion-based one-upmanship against the Baroness, staging increasingly audacious public spectacles that make Cruella a countercultural icon.
Emma Stone and Emma Thompson's dueling performances were the film's engine β their scenes crackled with mutual contempt, grudging admiration, and razor-sharp wit. Craig Gillespie leaned into the 1970s London punk aesthetic with infectious enthusiasm, and Jenny Beavan's Oscar-nominated costume design was extraordinary, with Cruella's outfits becoming increasingly theatrical and provocative. The soundtrack, featuring deep cuts from The Clash, Blondie, The Doors, and David Bowie, perfectly complemented the rebellious tone.
Cruella earned $233 million worldwide during a simultaneous theatrical and Disney+ Premier Access release and was well-received as one of the more creatively ambitious Disney live-action reimaginings.
