Donnie Brasco is a 1997 American crime drama directed by Mike Newell, based on the true story of FBI agent Joseph Pistone. Johnny Depp stars as Pistone, who infiltrates the Bonanno crime family under the alias Donnie Brasco and forms a genuine friendship with Lefty Ruggiero, played by Al Pacino, a low-ranking, aging wiseguy desperate for respect within the organization. As Donnie rises through the ranks and becomes increasingly embedded in the mob lifestyle, the line between his undercover identity and his real life blurs, destroying his marriage and threatening to consume his real self entirely.
Al Pacino's Lefty was one of his most poignant performances β a man whose loyalty and affection for Donnie are genuine, making the inevitable betrayal devastating for both characters. The film was notable for its unglamorous depiction of organized crime, showing the mob as a world of small-time hustles, petty humiliations, and constant paranoia rather than Godfather-style grandeur. Donnie Brasco earned $124 million worldwide on a $35 million budget.
