Fast & Furious (2009)
Where to Watch
- The original script for Fast & Furious was written over a decade before production finally began in 2009.
- Eagle-eyed viewers have noticed a hidden easter egg referencing Justin Lin's previous film in the background of the opening scene.
- Many of the practical effects used in the climax were achieved without any CGI.
Fast & Furious is a 2009 American action film directed by Justin Lin, the fourth installment that reunited the original cast โ Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Jordana Brewster, and Michelle Rodriguez โ for the first time since the 2001 original. Dominic Toretto and Brian O'Conner, now on opposite sides of the law, are forced to work together when they discover a shared connection to a cross-border drug trafficking operation run through tunnels between Mexico and the United States. Justin Lin's direction brought a grittier, more serious tone than the franchise's previous entries while introducing the increasingly elaborate vehicular action sequences that would become the series' hallmark.
The opening tanker truck heist in the Dominican Republic and the climactic tunnel chase through the U.S.-Mexico border were highlights. The reunion of the original four leads generated genuine audience enthusiasm. Fast & Furious earned $363 million worldwide on a $85 million budget, revitalizing the franchise after the underperforming Tokyo Drift and setting the stage for the series' transformation into a global action blockbuster phenomenon.
