Ghostbusters is a 2016 American supernatural comedy directed by Paul Feig, a reboot of the 1984 classic with an all-female lead cast. Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy star as Erin Gilbert and Abby Yates, former co-authors of a book on the paranormal who reunite when genuine ghost sightings begin occurring across New York City. Joined by nuclear engineer Jillian Holtzmann, played by Kate McKinnon, and MTA worker Patty Tolan, played by Leslie Jones, they form the Ghostbusters to investigate and combat an escalating supernatural threat orchestrated by a hotel janitor seeking to open a portal between dimensions.
The film generated extraordinary online controversy before its release, with the all-female casting provoking a misogynistic backlash that made it one of the most disliked trailers in YouTube history. Kate McKinnon's scene-stealing, eccentric Holtzmann was widely praised as the film's most entertaining element. The film earned $229 million worldwide on a $144 million budget, a commercial loss.
