Grease is a 1978 American musical romantic comedy directed by Randal Kleiser, based on the 1971 Broadway musical. John Travolta stars as Danny Zuko, the cool, leather-jacketed leader of the T-Birds greaser gang at Rydell High School in 1958, and Olivia Newton-John as Sandy Olsson, the wholesome Australian transfer student Danny romanced during summer vacation before discovering they attend the same school. Their attempt to navigate the reunion is complicated by Danny's need to maintain his tough-guy image in front of his friends and Sandy's desire for the genuine, sensitive boy she fell for over the summer.
Grease was a massive cultural phenomenon that became the highest-grossing musical film of all time for two decades. John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John's chemistry, particularly during the iconic "You're the One That I Want" finale, made them one of cinema's most beloved screen couples. The soundtrack, featuring "Summer Nights," "Greased Lightnin'," "Hopelessly Devoted to You," and "Beauty School Dropout," produced multiple hit singles and the bestselling soundtrack album in history at that time.
Grease earned $396 million worldwide on a $6 million budget.
