Hell or High Water is a 2016 American neo-Western crime drama directed by David Mackenzie, written by Taylor Sheridan as part of his frontier trilogy. Chris Pine and Ben Foster star as Toby and Tanner Howard, two Texas brothers who rob branches of the bank that is about to foreclose on their family ranch, while a Texas Ranger on the verge of retirement, played by Jeff Bridges, methodically tracks them across the drought-stricken West Texas landscape. Taylor Sheridan's screenplay examined how predatory lending practices devastated rural communities with the same precision he brought to Sicario's border violence and Wind River's reservation crisis.
Jeff Bridges earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor as the laconic, casually racist but deeply competent Marcus Hamilton. Hell or High Water earned $37 million worldwide on a $12 million budget and received four Academy Award nominations including Best Picture.
