Iron Man 3 is a 2013 American superhero film directed by Shane Black and starring Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark in the third standalone Iron Man installment within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Set after the traumatic events of The Avengers, the film finds Stark suffering from severe anxiety attacks and insomnia as he obsessively builds dozens of Iron Man suits. When a terrorist known as the Mandarin, played by Ben Kingsley, begins orchestrating a series of devastating bombings, Stark's world is destroyed โ his Malibu mansion is attacked, his suits are damaged, and he is left stranded in rural Tennessee with a malfunctioning prototype.
Shane Black, who had previously directed Downey in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, brought his signature witty dialogue and unconventional narrative structure to the blockbuster format, setting much of the film during Christmas and stripping Tony of his technology to focus on the character's resourcefulness and intelligence rather than his armor. The film's most controversial element was its twist revelation about the true identity of the Mandarin, which divided audiences but was praised by critics as a clever subversion of superhero genre expectations. Iron Man 3 earned $1.21 billion worldwide, making it the fifth highest-grossing film of all time at its release and the highest-grossing Iron Man film.
The film also notably explored post-traumatic stress in a superhero context, with Stark's panic attacks treated seriously rather than as a plot convenience.
