Moulin Rouge! is a 2001 Australian-American musical romantic drama directed by Baz Luhrmann, the concluding chapter of his Red Curtain Trilogy. Ewan McGregor stars as Christian, a young, penniless writer in 1899 Paris who falls in love with Satine, played by Nicole Kidman, the star courtesan and singer at the Moulin Rouge nightclub, who is secretly dying of tuberculosis while being claimed as the exclusive property of the wealthy Duke, played by Richard Roxburgh. Baz Luhrmann's signature maximalist style reached its most extreme expression โ the film was a kaleidoscopic barrage of rapid editing, tilted cameras, saturated color, and anachronistic music, using modern pop songs including "Lady Marmalade," Elton John's "Your Song," and a mashup love medley as diegetic performances in a 19th-century setting.
The approach was deliberately overwhelming, mirroring the sensory excess of the Moulin Rouge itself. Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman performed their own vocals with impressive skill and emotional commitment. Moulin Rouge! earned $179 million worldwide on a $50 million budget and received eight Academy Award nominations.
