Mystic River (2003)
Where to Watch
- Many of the practical effects used in the climax were achieved without any CGI.
- Clint Eastwood originally wanted a completely different ending for the film, but test audiences preferred the one we see today.
- Before Sean Penn was cast, several major A-list stars turned down the lead role because they felt the script was too risky.
Mystic River is a 2003 American neo-noir crime drama directed by Clint Eastwood, based on Dennis Lehane's 2001 novel. Sean Penn, Tim Robbins, and Kevin Bacon star as Jimmy Markum, Dave Boyle, and Sean Devine β three childhood friends from a working-class Boston neighborhood whose lives were shattered when Dave was abducted and sexually abused by two men posing as police officers. Twenty-five years later, when Jimmy's daughter is murdered, the investigation conducted by Sean, now a homicide detective, converges on Dave, whose erratic behavior and inability to account for his whereabouts on the night of the murder make him the prime suspect β but the truth is more devastating than anyone imagines.
Sean Penn won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his shattering portrayal of Jimmy, a former criminal whose grief manifests as an inexorable drive toward vengeance. Tim Robbins won Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Dave, a man so damaged by childhood trauma that he can barely function in the adult world. Clint Eastwood's measured, somber direction refused to provide catharsis or clear moral resolution.
Mystic River earned $156 million worldwide on a $25 million budget.
