Need for Speed is a 2014 American action film directed by Scott Waugh, loosely based on the Electronic Arts racing video game franchise. Aaron Paul stars as Tobey Marshall, a blue-collar mechanic and underground street racer in upstate New York who is framed for a crime by his wealthy rival Dino Brewster, played by Dominic Cooper, and sent to prison. Upon release, Tobey enters the De Leon β an illegal, invitation-only supercar race across the country β to clear his name and avenge the death of his friend.
The film's commitment to practical driving stunts was its strongest asset β the racing sequences used real supercars driven at genuine high speeds on closed roads, with minimal CGI enhancement, giving the action a tactile, visceral quality that distinguished it from the Fast and Furious franchise's more fantastical approach. Aaron Paul brought the intense, blue-collar determination that had defined Jesse Pinkman to a very different context. Need for Speed earned $203 million worldwide on a $66 million budget.
