Pacific Rim: Uprising is a 2018 American science fiction action film directed by Steven S. DeKnight, the sequel to Guillermo del Toro's 2013 original. John Boyega stars as Jake Pentecost, the rebellious son of Idris Elba's deceased war hero Stacker Pentecost, who is recruited back into the Pan Pacific Defense Corps when a new threat emerges โ rogue Jaegers and a conspiracy to reopen the breach between dimensions.
The film shifted from the original's operatic, del Toro-influenced tone toward a more conventional blockbuster approach, and the mech battles, while competently staged, lacked the weight and grandeur of del Toro's rain-soaked originals. John Boyega brought charisma and physicality to Jake, and the young cadet characters added generational energy. Pacific Rim: Uprising earned $290 million worldwide on a $150 million budget.
The film demonstrated the enduring commercial viability of its franchise and genre to global audiences, solidifying its position in the modern blockbuster landscape.
