Parasite is a 2019 South Korean black comedy thriller film directed by Bong Joon-ho, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Han Jin-won. The film follows the Kim family — father Ki-taek, mother Chung-sook, son Ki-woo, and daughter Ki-jung — who are all unemployed and living in a cramped semi-basement apartment. Through a chain of deceptions, they infiltrate the wealthy Park family's household by posing as unrelated, highly qualified professionals.
The film masterfully blends genres including comedy, thriller, horror, and social satire to explore themes of class inequality and social stratification in South Korean society. Parasite premiered at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Palme d'Or unanimously, becoming the first South Korean film to do so. At the 92nd Academy Awards, it made history by becoming the first non-English language film to win Best Picture, also winning Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best International Feature Film.
The film grossed over $263 million worldwide.
