Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is a 2017 American fantasy adventure film directed by Joachim Rรธnning and Espen Sandberg, the fifth installment in the franchise. Johnny Depp returns as the increasingly hapless Captain Jack Sparrow, whose past catches up with him when Captain Salazar, played by Javier Bardem, a ghostly Spanish naval officer trapped in the Devil's Triangle, escapes with his undead crew seeking revenge against the pirate who caused their deaths. Meanwhile, Henry Turner, the son of Will Turner and Elizabeth Swann played by Brenton Thwaites, seeks the legendary Trident of Poseidon to break his father's curse, enlisting the help of Carina Smyth, a self-taught astronomer played by Kaya Scodelario who is accused of witchcraft for her scientific knowledge.
The film represented an attempt to revitalize the franchise after the mixed reception of On Stranger Tides, introducing younger characters alongside the established cast. Javier Bardem's Salazar, rendered through a combination of performance and visual effects that gave him flowing spectral hair and a face that perpetually crumbled and reformed, was one of the franchise's most visually striking villains. The de-aging technology used to create a young Jack Sparrow flashback was impressive for its time.
Geoffrey Rush returned as Barbossa for what proved to be the character's most emotionally significant storyline. The film earned $794 million worldwide, a solid global performance driven primarily by international audiences.
