Pitch Perfect (2012)
- Eagle-eyed viewers have noticed a hidden easter egg referencing Jason Moore's previous film in the background of the opening scene.
- Many of the practical effects used in the climax were achieved without any CGI.
- Before Anna Kendrick was cast, several major A-list stars turned down the lead role because they felt the script was too risky.
Pitch Perfect is a 2012 American musical comedy directed by Jason Moore. Anna Kendrick stars as Beca Mitchell, a freshman at Barden University who reluctantly joins the Barden Bellas, the school's all-female a cappella group, and helps transform them from a conventional, by-the-book ensemble into a boundary-pushing force by incorporating beatboxing, mashups, and contemporary pop into their performances. The Bellas compete against the rival Treblemakers, the school's cocky all-male group, while Beca navigates her budding DJ ambitions and a romance with Jesse, played by Skylar Astin.
Rebel Wilson's performance as Fat Amy, a self-confidently irreverent Australian who owns every scene with her deadpan one-liners, was the film's breakout comedic element. The riff-off scene, in which a cappella groups battle each other through spontaneous song categories, became the franchise's signature set piece. Anna Kendrick's performance of the "Cups" song ("When I'm Gone") went massively viral and reached number six on the Billboard Hot 100.
Pitch Perfect earned $115 million worldwide on a $17 million budget and launched a three-film franchise.
