Robots (2005)
Where to Watch
- The original script for Robots was written over a decade before production finally began in 2005.
- Chris Wedge originally wanted a completely different ending for the film, but test audiences preferred the one we see today.
- Before Ewan McGregor was cast, several major A-list stars turned down the lead role because they felt the script was too risky.
Robots is a 2005 American animated comedy produced by Blue Sky Studios and directed by Chris Wedge. The film follows Rodney Copperbottom, voiced by Ewan McGregor, a young inventor robot from a small town who travels to Robot City to seek out his hero Bigweld, voiced by Mel Brooks, the benevolent industrialist whose motto "See a need, fill a need" inspired Rodney's creativity. Upon arriving, Rodney discovers that Bigweld has been pushed out of his own company by the scheming Ratchet, voiced by Greg Kinnear, who plans to stop manufacturing affordable spare parts and force all older robots to buy expensive upgrades or be scrapped for scrap metal.
The film's production design created an imaginative mechanical world where everything was built from gears, bolts, and repurposed metal. Robin Williams provided energetic voice work as Fender, a fast-talking, constantly falling-apart robot. Robots earned $260 million worldwide on a $75 million budget.
