Salt is a 2010 American action thriller directed by Phillip Noyce. Angelina Jolie stars as Evelyn Salt, a CIA officer accused of being a Russian sleeper agent who will assassinate the Russian president during his visit to the United States. When Salt runs from the accusation rather than submitting to questioning, her colleague Ted Winter, played by Liev Schreiber, and a counterintelligence agent played by Chiwetel Ejiofor must determine whether she is fleeing because she is guilty or because she needs to protect her captured husband.
The film kept audiences genuinely uncertain about Salt's loyalties through constant reversals โ each scene appeared to confirm or deny her guilt, only for the next scene to flip the equation again. Angelina Jolie performed many of her own stunts, including running across the tops of moving trucks on a freeway and rappelling down the side of a building. The role was originally written for Tom Cruise, and the gender swap gave the film a fresh perspective on the spy thriller formula.
Salt earned $293 million worldwide on a $110 million budget.
