Sausage Party (2016)
Where to Watch
- Before Seth Rogen was cast, several major A-list stars turned down the lead role because they felt the script was too risky.
- Many of the practical effects used in the climax were achieved without any CGI.
- Eagle-eyed viewers have noticed a hidden easter egg referencing Conrad Vernon, Greg Tiernan's previous film in the background of the opening scene.
Sausage Party is a 2016 American adult animated comedy directed by Greg Tiernan and Conrad Vernon. Seth Rogen voices Frank, a hot dog in a supermarket who believes, like all the food products, that being selected by shoppers leads to "the Great Beyond" โ a paradise of eternal happiness. When Frank discovers the horrifying truth that the Great Beyond means being eaten, he must warn his fellow groceries while pursuing a romantic relationship with a hot dog bun named Brenda, voiced by Kristen Wiig.
Sausage Party was the first CGI-animated film to receive an R rating in the United States, and it fully earned the classification through graphic food-on-food violence, extensive sexual content, and wall-to-wall profanity. The premise โ what if the food in your supermarket was alive and sentient โ was exploited for both crude comedy and surprisingly pointed satire of organized religion, with the food's belief in the Great Beyond functioning as an allegory for religious faith. The film's climactic sequence was one of the most deliberately shocking scenes in mainstream animation.
Sausage Party earned $140 million worldwide on a $19 million budget.
