Shutter Island is a 2010 American psychological thriller film directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Set in 1954, the film follows U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels and his partner Chuck Aule as they investigate the disappearance of a patient from Ashecliffe Hospital, a facility for the criminally insane located on a remote island in Boston Harbor.
As a hurricane traps them on the island, Daniels begins to uncover what he believes is a sinister conspiracy involving illegal experiments on patients, while his own grip on reality becomes increasingly tenuous. Based on Dennis Lehane's 2003 novel, the film marked the fourth collaboration between Scorsese and DiCaprio. Shutter Island was originally scheduled for an October 2009 release but was delayed to February 2010, leading to speculation about the studio's confidence in the film, though it opened to $41 million and went on to earn $295 million worldwide β making it the second highest-grossing film of Scorsese's career at that time.
The film's twist ending became a major topic of discussion and repeated viewings, as viewers searched for the carefully planted clues throughout the narrative. Scorsese employed an unusually heightened visual style, drawing from classic film noir and 1950s horror cinema to create a persistently unsettling atmosphere. The film's ending, deliberately ambiguous about the nature of its protagonist's reality, continues to inspire debate among audiences years after its release.
