- Eagle-eyed viewers have noticed a hidden easter egg referencing Clint Eastwood's previous film in the background of the opening scene.
- The incredible score for Sully was composed in just a few weeks after the original composer dropped out.
- Before Tom Hanks was cast, several major A-list stars turned down the lead role because they felt the script was too risky.
Sully is a 2016 American biographical drama directed by Clint Eastwood. Tom Hanks stars as Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger, the US Airways pilot who, on January 15, 2009, successfully landed Airbus A320 Flight 1549 on the Hudson River after both engines were disabled by a bird strike shortly after takeoff from LaGuardia Airport, saving all 155 passengers and crew. The film focuses not on the landing itself โ which is depicted in harrowing detail through multiple perspectives โ but on the subsequent National Transportation Safety Board investigation that questioned whether Sully made the right call, with computer simulations suggesting he could have returned safely to LaGuardia.
Tom Hanks brought his trademark decency and quiet authority to Sully, portraying a man who performed an extraordinary feat under impossible pressure and then had to defend his instinctive decision against bureaucratic second-guessing. Aaron Eckhart co-starred as First Officer Jeff Skiles. Clint Eastwood's direction was characteristically restrained, allowing the story's inherent drama to speak for itself.
The multiple recreations of the water landing, filmed from the cockpit, the cabin, and the rescue boats, were genuinely gripping. Sully earned $240 million worldwide on a $60 million budget.
