The Hurt Locker (2008)
- The original script for The Hurt Locker was written over a decade before production finally began in 2008.
- Before Jeremy Renner was cast, several major A-list stars turned down the lead role because they felt the script was too risky.
- Many of the practical effects used in the climax were achieved without any CGI.
The Hurt Locker is a 2008 American war thriller directed by Kathryn Bigelow, following an Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal team during the Iraq War. Jeremy Renner stars as Sergeant First Class William James, a brilliant but reckless bomb technician who is addicted to the adrenaline of defusing improvised explosive devices, putting himself and his team โ including the cautious Sergeant Sanborn played by Anthony Mackie and the young Specialist Eldridge played by Brian Geraghty โ in constant danger through his maverick approach. Kathryn Bigelow's direction created an almost unbearable tension through long, mostly silent bomb-disposal sequences where the audience could feel every bead of sweat and every click of wire cutters.
The Hurt Locker won six Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director, making Bigelow the first woman to win the Best Director Oscar. The film earned $49 million worldwide on a $15 million budget. Chris Hedges's opening quote โ "war is a drug" โ framed the entire film as an exploration of combat addiction that was more psychologically honest than most war films dared to be.
