The Illusionist is a 2006 American romantic mystery directed by Neil Burger. Edward Norton stars as Eisenheim, a stage magician in turn-of-the-century Vienna whose extraordinary illusions attract the attention โ and suspicion โ of Chief Inspector Uhl, played by Paul Giamatti, who serves the corrupt Crown Prince Leopold, played by Rufus Sewell. When Eisenheim's childhood love, the Duchess Sophie played by Jessica Biel, reappears as Leopold's fiancee, Eisenheim's magic becomes entangled with political intrigue and the question of whether his illusions are tricks or genuine supernatural powers.
Edward Norton brought quiet intensity and mysterious charisma to Eisenheim, a man whose poker-faced performance conceals both his heartbreak and his elaborate plans. Philip Glass's hypnotic score and Dick Pope's amber-toned cinematography created a warm, candlelit atmosphere. The Illusionist earned $87 million worldwide on a $16 million budget.
