The Invisible Man is a 2020 Australian-American science fiction horror film written and directed by Leigh Whannell, a modern reimagining of H.G. Wells's classic novel. Elisabeth Moss stars as Cecilia Kass, a woman who escapes her abusive, controlling boyfriend Adrian Griffin, played by Oliver Jackson-Cohen, a wealthy optics scientist.
When Adrian apparently commits suicide and leaves Cecilia his fortune, she becomes convinced that he has faked his death and developed a suit that renders him invisible, and that he is stalking and terrorizing her โ a claim that nobody believes. Leigh Whannell's genius was reframing the Invisible Man story from the perspective of the victim rather than the monster, creating a horror film that functioned as a viscerally effective metaphor for the experience of domestic abuse โ the gaslighting, the isolation, the feeling of being constantly watched, and the frustration of not being believed. Elisabeth Moss delivered one of the most physically and emotionally demanding performances of the year.
The Invisible Man earned $143 million worldwide on a $7 million budget.
