The Others is a 2001 Spanish-American supernatural gothic horror film written and directed by Alejandro Amenábar. Nicole Kidman stars as Grace Stewart, a devoutly Catholic mother living in a remote, darkened mansion on the island of Jersey in 1945, waiting for her husband to return from World War II while raising two children who suffer from a rare photosensitivity that requires the house to remain in perpetual darkness — every room must be locked and curtained before another is opened. When three new servants arrive and the children begin claiming they can see and hear people in the house, Grace becomes increasingly convinced that the house is haunted by intruders.
Nicole Kidman delivered one of the finest performances of her career — her tightly wound Grace, simultaneously fragile and fierce, religious and terrified, became the emotional center of a film that built its horror through atmosphere, suggestion, and the creeping dread of a house that should feel safe but doesn't. The film's twist ending, which completely recontextualized the entire narrative, was one of the most effective and emotionally devastating reveals of the decade. The Others earned $210 million worldwide on a $17 million budget.
