The Royal Tenenbaums is a 2001 American comedy-drama directed by Wes Anderson. Gene Hackman stars as Royal Tenenbaum, a disbarred attorney and estranged patriarch of a family of former child prodigies who announces he is dying of cancer to reunite with his ex-wife Etheline, played by Anjelica Huston, and their three adult children: Chas, a widowed businessman played by Ben Stiller; Margot, a playwright in a loveless marriage played by Gwyneth Paltrow; and Richie, a disgraced tennis champion played by Luke Wilson. Royal's cancer announcement is a lie โ a transparent, selfish manipulation that nonetheless becomes the catalyst for genuine family reconciliation.
Wes Anderson's meticulous visual style reached a new level of sophistication, with every frame composed like a dollhouse diorama and the fictional Tenenbaum family brownstone becoming one of cinema's most recognizable imaginary locations. Gene Hackman's performance was the film's heart โ his Royal was simultaneously the family's greatest source of damage and its most charismatic, life-affirming presence. The Royal Tenenbaums earned $71 million worldwide on a $21 million budget.
