The Twilight Saga: New Moon is a 2009 American romantic fantasy film directed by Chris Weitz, the second installment in the Twilight franchise. The film follows Bella Swan after Edward Cullen abruptly leaves her to protect her from the dangers of his vampire world, plunging Bella into months of catatonic depression. She discovers that adrenaline-inducing activities trigger hallucinations of Edward, leading her to increasingly reckless behavior.
Bella also deepens her relationship with Jacob Black, played by Taylor Lautner, who is revealed to be a werewolf from the Quileute tribe. Taylor Lautner's physical transformation for the role โ gaining approximately 30 pounds of muscle between the first and second films โ became a media phenomenon and fueled the Team Edward vs. Team Jacob debate that dominated pop culture.
Chris Weitz brought a more polished visual style than the first film, and the Italian sequences set in Volterra, introducing the ancient vampire royalty the Volturi led by Michael Sheen's Aro, expanded the franchise's mythology. New Moon earned $709 million worldwide, nearly doubling the original's gross.
