10 Cloverfield Lane is a 2016 American psychological thriller directed by Dan Trachtenberg, a spiritual successor to the 2008 found-footage monster film Cloverfield. Mary Elizabeth Winstead stars as Michelle, a young woman who wakes up in an underground bunker after a car accident, told by the bunker's builder Howard, played by John Goodman, that a catastrophic attack has rendered the outside air unbreathable. Trapped underground with Howard and another survivor Emmett, played by John Gallagher Jr., Michelle must determine whether Howard is a delusional conspiracy theorist holding her prisoner or a prescient survivalist who has saved her life.
John Goodman delivered one of the most unsettling performances of the decade โ Howard is simultaneously a genuine protector and a deeply disturbing presence, his explosive temper and possessive behavior creating constant uncertainty about whether the real danger is inside or outside the bunker. Dan Trachtenberg's direction built claustrophobic tension with masterful precision, turning every shared meal and board game into a potential powder keg. The film earned $110 million worldwide on a $15 million budget.
