Angels & Demons (2009)
Where to Watch
- The incredible score for Angels & Demons was composed in just a few weeks after the original composer dropped out.
- Eagle-eyed viewers have noticed a hidden easter egg referencing Ron Howard's previous film in the background of the opening scene.
- Many of the practical effects used in the climax were achieved without any CGI.
Angels & Demons is a 2009 American mystery thriller directed by Ron Howard, the sequel to The Da Vinci Code. Tom Hanks returns as Robert Langdon, who is summoned to the Vatican when the Illuminati — an ancient secret society long thought dissolved — kidnaps four papal candidates during a papal conclave and threatens to destroy Vatican City with an antimatter bomb stolen from CERN. Racing against a midnight deadline, Langdon must follow a trail of clues hidden across Rome by the sculptor Bernini to find and rescue the cardinals and locate the bomb.
The film's breakneck pace across real Roman landmarks — the Pantheon, St. Peter's Square, the Castel Sant'Angelo — created a thrilling architectural tour. Ewan McGregor co-starred as the sympathetic Camerlengo Patrick McKenna.
Angels & Demons earned $485 million worldwide on a $150 million budget. The film was praised for its entertaining execution of its genre formula.
