Audience Consensus

Assassin's Creed is a 2016 American science fiction action film directed by Justin Kurzel, based on Ubisoft's bestselling video game franchise. Michael Fassbender stars as Callum Lynch, a death-row prisoner who is rescued by the shadowy Abstergo Foundation and connected to the Animus, a machine that allows him to relive the genetic memories of his ancestor Aguilar de Nerha, an Assassin operating in 15th-century Spain during the Inquisition. Through the Animus sessions, Cal experiences Aguilar's mission to protect the Apple of Eden โ€” an artifact capable of eliminating free will โ€” from the Templars, while in the present day, he must decide where his loyalty lies in the ongoing Assassin-Templar conflict.

The historical Spanish sequences, featuring elaborate parkour chase scenes across the rooftops and towers of Andalusia, were visually impressive and faithful to the games' aesthetic. Michael Fassbender brought intensity to both the historical and modern-day roles, and Marion Cotillard added complexity as the Abstergo scientist whose scientific idealism conceals deeper conflicts. Assassin's Creed earned $240 million worldwide on a $125 million budget, a commercial disappointment.
