Chappie is a 2015 South African-American science fiction film directed by Neill Blomkamp. In a near-future Johannesburg where robot police officers maintain law and order, engineer Deon Wilson, played by Dev Patel, creates true artificial consciousness and installs it in a damaged robot that is adopted by a gang of criminals who name him Chappie. As Chappie learns about the world with childlike innocence while being taught both compassion by Deon and criminal behavior by the gang, a rival weapons designer played by Hugh Jackman seeks to destroy all scout robots to promote his own military mech.
Neill Blomkamp continued exploring his recurring themes of artificial intelligence, South African social inequality, and the military-industrial complex. Die Antwoord members Ninja and Yolandi Visser played fictionalized versions of themselves as Chappie's criminal adoptive parents. The film earned $102 million worldwide on a $49 million budget.
