Terminator Genisys is a 2015 American science fiction action film directed by Alan Taylor, the fifth installment in the Terminator franchise. The film attempts to reboot the series by rewriting the original timeline: when Kyle Reese, played by Jai Courtney, is sent back to 1984 to protect Sarah Connor, he arrives to find that history has already been altered โ Sarah, played by Emilia Clarke, has been raised since childhood by a reprogrammed T-800 she calls "Pops," played by Arnold Schwarzenegger, and is already a trained warrior. Together they must navigate a fractured timeline where Skynet has evolved into a consumer operating system called Genisys, scheduled to go online in 2017.
The film's most talked-about element was the digitally de-aged Arnold Schwarzenegger fighting his 1984 self in a recreation of the original film's opening scene, a technically impressive sequence. Schwarzenegger brought warmth and humor to the aging T-800 role. The film earned $440 million worldwide on a $155 million budget but was considered a commercial disappointment given its costs, and planned sequels were cancelled.
