Where to Watch
- Guillermo del Toro originally wanted a completely different ending for the film, but test audiences preferred the one we see today.
- Before Mia Wasikowska was cast, several major A-list stars turned down the lead role because they felt the script was too risky.
- The original script for Crimson Peak was written over a decade before production finally began in 2015.
Crimson Peak is a 2015 American gothic horror romance directed by Guillermo del Toro. Mia Wasikowska stars as Edith Cushing, an aspiring writer in 1901 Buffalo, New York who marries the charming English baronet Sir Thomas Sharpe, played by Tom Hiddleston, and moves to his crumbling, blood-red English manor โ Allerdale Hall, known as Crimson Peak because the red clay beneath it seeps through the walls and floors like wounds. There, Edith encounters ghosts and discovers that Thomas and his sister Lucille, played by Jessica Chastain, harbor devastating secrets.
Guillermo del Toro designed Allerdale Hall as a living character โ the house breathed, bled, and decomposed, with leaves and snow falling through holes in the ceiling and red clay oozing through the floorboards, creating one of the most sumptuously designed haunted houses in cinema. Crimson Peak earned $74 million worldwide on a $55 million budget.
