Deadpool is a 2016 American superhero film based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name, directed by Tim Miller and starring Ryan Reynolds. The film follows Wade Wilson, a former Special Forces operative turned mercenary who is diagnosed with terminal cancer and undergoes an experimental procedure conducted by the sadistic Ajax that leaves him horribly disfigured but grants him accelerated healing powers. Adopting the alter ego Deadpool, Wilson hunts down Ajax while breaking the fourth wall with irreverent humor throughout.
The film was a landmark for the superhero genre, proving that an R-rated comic book movie could achieve massive commercial success โ it earned over $782 million worldwide on a modest $58 million budget, making it the highest-grossing R-rated film at the time. Ryan Reynolds had championed the project for over a decade after a poorly received version of the character appeared in X-Men Origins: Wolverine. The film's path to production was tortuous: Fox greenlit it only after leaked test footage generated overwhelming online enthusiasm.
Reynolds' unconventional marketing campaign, including promoting the movie in character across social media, became legendary in Hollywood and set new standards for creative film promotion. Deadpool received widespread praise for its self-aware humor, inventive action sequences, and Reynolds' performance, which perfectly captured the character's comic book personality. The film spawned a successful franchise that eventually brought the character into the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Deadpool & Wolverine in 2024, completing Reynolds' decade-long mission to bring the Merc with a Mouth to the screen properly.
