Elemental is a 2023 American animated romantic comedy produced by Pixar Animation Studios and directed by Peter Sohn. Set in Element City, a metropolis where residents made of fire, water, earth, and air live together, the film follows Ember Lumen, a fiery, temperamental young fire element voiced by Leah Lewis, and Wade Ripple, a sensitive, emotional water element voiced by Mamoudou Athie, whose chance encounter sparks an unlikely friendship that challenges the city's social norms โ fire and water aren't supposed to mix. Peter Sohn drew from his own experience as the son of Korean immigrants in New York City, and the film's central metaphor โ different elements learning to coexist in a diverse city while respecting each other's boundaries โ was a story about immigration, cultural assimilation, and interracial relationships told through animation's most visually inventive premise.
Elemental had the weakest opening of any Pixar film but demonstrated remarkable legs, eventually earning $496 million worldwide through strong word-of-mouth and international appeal.
