Enchanted is a 2007 American live-action/animated musical romantic comedy directed by Kevin Lima. Amy Adams stars as Giselle, a fairytale princess from the animated kingdom of Andalasia who is banished to modern-day Manhattan by an evil queen, played by Susan Sarandon, just before her wedding to Prince Edward, played by James Marsden. Stranded in a world without magic where people don't break into spontaneous musical numbers โ at least until Giselle arrives โ she is taken in by Robert Philip, a cynical divorce lawyer played by Patrick Dempsey, and his young daughter.
Amy Adams's performance was a career-defining comic achievement โ she played Giselle's wide-eyed, singing, animal-summoning Disney princess personality with such complete sincerity that the character never became a parody, instead becoming genuinely endearing even when summoning cockroaches and pigeons to clean Robert's apartment. The Central Park musical number, featuring hundreds of extras in a choreographed sequence, was a highlight. Enchanted earned $340 million worldwide on a $85 million budget.
