Green Lantern (2011)
- Many of the practical effects used in the climax were achieved without any CGI.
- Martin Campbell originally wanted a completely different ending for the film, but test audiences preferred the one we see today.
- Before Ryan Reynolds was cast, several major A-list stars turned down the lead role because they felt the script was too risky.
Green Lantern is a 2011 American superhero film directed by Martin Campbell. Ryan Reynolds stars as Hal Jordan, a cocky, irresponsible test pilot who is chosen by a dying alien to inherit a powerful ring that makes him the first human member of the Green Lantern Corps, an intergalactic peacekeeping force powered by willpower. Hal must overcome his self-doubt to master the ring's ability to create anything he can imagine and defend Earth from Parallax, an entity of pure fear.
Green Lantern was one of the most high-profile superhero misfires of its era, struggling with tonal inconsistency between its cosmic mythology and Earth-bound romantic comedy, and CGI that was criticized as unconvincing β particularly the fully computer-generated Green Lantern suit worn by Reynolds. Ryan Reynolds himself later mocked the film extensively in Deadpool. The film earned $219 million worldwide on a $200 million budget, a significant loss that shelved DC's plans for a Green Lantern franchise.
