I Am Number Four is a 2011 American science fiction action film directed by D.J. Caruso. Alex Pettyfer stars as John Smith, a teenager who is actually an alien from the planet Lorien, one of nine children sent to Earth as infants to escape the destruction of their homeworld by the Mogadorians, a rival alien race.
The nine children are developing extraordinary powers and can only be killed in numerical order โ the first three are dead, and John, Number Four, is next. Hiding in a small Ohio town with his alien guardian Henri, played by Timothy Olyphant, John must navigate high school while evading Mogadorian assassins and coming into his powers. The film was designed to launch a franchise based on Pittacus Lore's young adult novel series, but mixed reviews and $150 million worldwide on a $50 million budget โ modest by franchise standards โ prevented sequels.
Alex Pettyfer brought brooding physicality to the role, and Teresa Palmer's Number Six โ a fierce, experienced alien warrior who arrives to help John โ was the film's most dynamic action presence and a clear setup for a franchise that never materialized.
