Men in Black 3 is a 2012 American science fiction action comedy directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, the third installment in the Men in Black franchise. Will Smith returns as Agent J, who must travel back in time to 1969 after an alien criminal named Boris the Animal, played by Jemaine Clement, escapes from a lunar prison and alters history by killing the young Agent K, erasing his partner from the present timeline. In the past, J teams up with the younger version of K, played by Josh Brolin in a performance that uncannily channeled Tommy Lee Jones's mannerisms and vocal cadences.
Men in Black 3 was notable for its troubled production β filming began without a completed script, leading to an extended production hiatus that ballooned the budget to approximately $225 million. Despite these difficulties, the finished film was the most emotionally satisfying entry in the franchise, with a twist ending revealing the origin of J and K's partnership that gave the entire trilogy unexpected emotional depth. Josh Brolin's portrayal of young K was the film's greatest achievement, capturing Jones's laconic delivery and stoic physicality while adding a warmth and vulnerability that the older K had buried.
Michael Stuhlbarg's Griffin, a gentle alien who could perceive all possible timelines simultaneously, was a memorable addition. Men in Black 3 earned $624 million worldwide.
