Noah is a 2014 American biblical epic directed by Darren Aronofsky. Russell Crowe stars as Noah, the biblical patriarch who receives visions from the Creator that the world will be destroyed by a great flood as punishment for humanity's wickedness. Noah must build an enormous ark to preserve the innocent animals while grappling with the agonizing moral question of whether any human β including his own family β deserves to be saved.
Darren Aronofsky's interpretation was deliberately provocative, presenting Noah not as the serene, bearded figure of Sunday school illustrations but as a tormented, possibly fanatical man whose interpretation of God's will drives him to near-madness. The Watchers, fallen angels encased in stone who help build the ark, were the film's most divisive creative choice β some audiences embraced the fantasy elements while others found them incompatible with the biblical source. Jennifer Connelly, Emma Watson, and Anthony Hopkins rounded out the cast.
Noah earned $362 million worldwide on a $125 million budget.
