Perfect Strangers is a 2016 Italian comedy-drama directed by Paolo Genovese. Seven long-time friends gather for a dinner party and, as a game, agree to place their smartphones on the table and share every incoming message, phone call, and notification with the entire group for the evening. What begins as a lighthearted experiment in transparency rapidly becomes devastating as the phones reveal affairs, secret identities, hidden debts, undisclosed medical conditions, and sexual orientations that each person has been concealing from their closest friends and spouses.
Paolo Genovese created one of the most acclaimed and widely remade Italian films of the decade โ the concept was so universal and so perfectly constructed that Perfect Strangers has been officially remade in over 20 countries, earning a Guinness World Record for the most remade film. The film demonstrated that the smartphone had become the most intimate object in human life and that transparency, rather than liberating, could be catastrophic. Perfect Strangers earned over $18 million in Italy alone.
