Pocahontas is a 1995 American animated musical drama produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation, loosely inspired by the historical figure of the Powhatan woman Pocahontas and the English colonist John Smith. The film depicts a romanticized version of their encounter in 1607 Virginia, as Pocahontas, a free-spirited young woman connected to the natural world, meets Smith, a settler with the Virginia Company expedition, and their forbidden relationship becomes the bridge between two cultures heading toward violent conflict. Alan Menken and Stephen Schwartz composed the score and songs, including "Colors of the Wind," which won the Academy Award for Best Original Song and became one of Disney's most environmentally conscious musical moments.
Pocahontas was notable as Disney's first animated film based on a real historical figure, though the significant liberties taken with history โ particularly the romanticized relationship and the ages of the characters โ were criticized by historians and some Native American groups. The film earned $346 million worldwide.
