- The original script for [REC] was written over a decade before production finally began in 2007.
[REC] is a 2007 Spanish found-footage horror film directed by Jaume Balaguero and Paco Plaza. The film follows Angela Vidal, a television reporter played by Manuela Velasco, and her cameraman who are embedded with a Barcelona fire crew for a late-night reality show. When they respond to a call at an apartment building where an elderly woman has been heard screaming, they discover the resident has been infected with a virus that transforms her into a savage, biting predator.
The building is sealed and quarantined by authorities, trapping the firefighters, residents, and film crew inside as the infection spreads floor by floor. [REC] was one of the most effective found-footage horror films ever made, using the single-camera perspective and real-time format to create claustrophobic, unrelenting terror. The penthouse attic sequence, shot entirely in night vision, delivered one of the decade's most genuinely terrifying climactic reveals. [REC] earned $32 million worldwide on a $2 million budget.
