Skyfall is a 2012 British spy film directed by Sam Mendes, the 23rd official James Bond film and widely considered one of the finest entries in the franchise's 50-year history. Daniel Craig returns as Bond in a story that strips the character to his foundations β after a botched mission in Istanbul and a devastating attack on MI6 headquarters, Bond must confront both a personal enemy from M's past and his own doubts about whether he's still fit for service. Javier Bardem plays Raoul Silva, a former MI6 agent driven mad by betrayal who has become a cyberterrorist with a deeply personal vendetta against M, played by Judi Dench in her most substantial and emotionally complex appearance in the role.
Sam Mendes, an Academy Award-winning director previously known for American Beauty, brought an unexpected level of thematic depth and visual sophistication to the franchise. Cinematographer Roger Deakins, working with Mendes for the fifth time, created what many consider the most beautiful Bond film ever shot β the Shanghai skyscraper sequence, illuminated by neon jellyfish reflected in glass, and the Scottish Highlands climax photographed in stark natural light, were singled out as particularly stunning. Skyfall was released during the franchise's 50th anniversary and deliberately explored themes of aging, obsolescence, and whether institutions like MI6 β and by extension Bond himself β still have relevance in the modern world.
Adele's title song won the Academy Award for Best Original Song. The film earned $1.11 billion worldwide, becoming the first Bond film to cross the billion-dollar mark and the highest-grossing British film of all time. Skyfall is frequently cited as the best Bond film since the Sean Connery era.
