Spider-Man 3 is a 2007 American superhero film directed by Sam Raimi, the conclusion of his Spider-Man trilogy and, at the time of its release, the most expensive film ever produced. The film follows Peter Parker as he contends with three villains simultaneously: Sandman, a small-time criminal transformed into a being of living sand played by Thomas Haden Church, who is revealed to have been involved in Uncle Ben's death; Harry Osborn, who finally confronts Peter as the New Goblin; and Venom, an alien symbiote that bonds with Peter and amplifies his darkest impulses before attaching to rival photographer Eddie Brock, played by Topher Grace. Spider-Man 3 became one of the most discussed cautionary tales in superhero filmmaking, widely cited as an example of studio interference undermining a director's vision.
Sam Raimi had originally planned a more focused film centered on Sandman and Harry Osborn, but Sony Pictures insisted on the inclusion of Venom — a character Raimi had little personal interest in — due to the character's enormous fan popularity. The resulting film was criticized for its overcrowded plot and uneven tone, particularly the sequence in which the symbiote-influenced Peter struts through Manhattan in a scene that divided audiences between those who read it as intentional comedy and those who found it cringe-inducing. Despite mixed reviews, Spider-Man 3 earned $894 million worldwide, the highest-grossing film in the trilogy.
Thomas Haden Church's sympathetic performance as Sandman and his stunning sand transformation sequence were praised as the film's strongest elements. The trilogy's conclusion with Harry Osborn's sacrifice and Peter and Mary Jane's reconciliation provided emotional closure, though the franchise would be rebooted just five years later.
