The Batman is a 2022 American superhero film directed by Matt Reeves, presenting a grounded, noir-influenced reboot of the Batman franchise. Robert Pattinson stars as Bruce Wayne in his second year as the masked vigilante, investigating a series of murders committed by the Riddler, played by Paul Dano, a forensic accountant who targets Gotham's corrupt elite while leaving cryptic ciphers for Batman at each crime scene. The investigation draws Batman into the city's political underworld, where he encounters Selina Kyle played by Zoë Kravitz, crime boss Carmine Falcone played by John Turturro, and the Penguin played by Colin Farrell under layers of prosthetic makeup.
Matt Reeves conceived The Batman as a detective story first and a superhero film second, drawing heavily from film noir, Se7en, and Chinatown to create the darkest and most grounded Batman film since the character's creation. Robert Pattinson's Bruce Wayne was younger, more psychologically damaged, and less polished than previous incarnations — a recluse who has poured every ounce of himself into vengeance and is only beginning to understand that Gotham needs hope, not just fear. Greig Fraser's cinematography, often illuminated only by practical light sources like car headlights, muzzle flashes, and the Bat Signal, created an oppressive visual atmosphere.
Michael Giacchino's thunderous, minimalist score — built around a simple four-note motif — was one of the most effective superhero themes in years. The Batman earned $770 million worldwide and was praised as one of the finest Batman films ever made.
